obesity

According to World Health Organization (WHO), obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally, with more than 1 billion adults overweight – at least 300 million of them clinically obese – and is a major contributor to the global burden of chronic disease and disability. United States has the most number of obese people (with 30.6%) compared to other countries all over the world. Next on the list is Mexico (24.2%) and followed by United Kingdom (23%).

Nowadays, many are looking for some ways (easy ways to be exact) to lose weight. One option is by taking quick weight loss pills. Though this method is unhealthy, many companies are working every day to produce diet pills and supplements to cater to this growing demand. The health risk becomes even greater with diet pills and supplements that are available over the counter, as they are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). But there are weight loss drugs that many doctors prescribe because they are effective and safe.

Here are some best weight loss pills which are mostly prescribed by doctors. These are effective and safe to use.

  • Xenical (also known as Orlistat)
  • This drug works by blocking fat from being completely absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract.

Doctors prescribe this drug because it is not absorbed into the body, and it is much safer than those that are absorbed. Xenical is safer but less effective when paired with a low-fat diet. If less fat is included in your diet, then the Xenical will have very little fat to block, causing your fat intake to be very low.

The other plus to maintaining a low-fat diet while using this drug is that it cuts back on side effects. When you eat a diet that is high in fat and use this drug, more fat is blocked. This causes problems such as loose or urgent bowel movements. If you experience these side effects, you probably need to lower your fat intake.

A weaker strength of this drug is available over the counter as Alli.

  • Meridia (also known as Sibutramine)
  • This drug affects the appetite control portion of the brain to control hunger and make you feel full. It is useful especially for people who overeat or crave unhealthy foods.

Dry mouth, constipation and insomnia are some of the more common side effects, but this can also cause a dangerous variation in blood pressure if you already suffer from cardiovascular disease.

  • Phentermine
  • This is one of the more popularly prescribed weight loss drugs because it has been around the longest and is the least expensive. Phentermine is another appetite suppressant that makes you feel fuller faster. Side effects can include depression, insomnia, increased blood pressure, irritability and nervousness.
